Frequently Asked Questions

-
What happens in the first session? The first session will be used for doing a small assessment; this is to help us decide if we will be able to work well together, it will also help me get to know what you are hoping to get out of the work we do together and if you have any specific goals.
-
How long are the sessions? Each session will usually be 50 minutes, there may be some exceptions for this, for example, if we are working with trauma we may decide to have a few longer sessions which would be discussed beforehand.

-
How often will I need sessions? How often will always depend on your current need, I would usually suggest weekly at least for the first few sessions to help us get into the swing of things but we can discuss your feelings about this together.

Are online sessions as effective as in person sessions? I understand that for some people in person sessions may be a requirement, however, I have been working with clients online for the past 5 years both in private practice and the NHS and have not noticed an significant difference in effectiveness of sessions. It can also give more flexibility with times and locations. Some of my clients may meet me during their working day in a private room, this allows some people to access therapy when they otherwise may be unable due to work or family commitments. Please let me know if you have any reservations.

What is counselling? Counselling is included under the broad term of 'talking therapies,' it allows clients to talk about issues and difficult feelings they may have in a safe, confidential space without judgement. The term counselling can have different meanings for different people, but most commonly people seek counselling when they hope to change something in their lives or if they wish to explore thoughts and feelings that may be having a negative effect on their lives.
